Hi ladies and themmes! You all are so amazing and in order to help y'all be even more amazing, I've decided to share my knowledge of wig wearing. I have naturally thick hair a bit past my shoulders but I've worn wigs almost every day for about four years. I've learned a bunch that I'd like to teach everyone!
First: the forehead. A lot of femmes place their wigs too low on their forehead. To find out where your hairline should be, place a hand just above your eyebrow. Depending upon your hairline, the correct placement should either be 3 fingers up on your forehead or four.
Second: hard front VS lace front. Hard fronts are wigs that are just that, a hard front. They don't have lace fronts which mimic hair growing out of your head. For hard fronts, get one with bangs. Having one without bangs looks very fake since it's very harsh and no Human's hairline looks like that.
Third: Parting. Most cheap wigs will have hair parting that looks very fake and costumy. I honestly would suggest you just don't buy them period but if you already have one you like, wear a hat or beanie over it to cover the parting. Plucking it and covering it up with concealer MAY do the trick but I have never been able to do that myself.
Fourth: quality. I know a lot of us are poor, shit sucks out there. However, saving up for a quality wig or just finding cheap good quality wigs helps. I have found a $400 dollar wig on eBay, gently used, for $90. You should also be on the lookout for discounts on websites. I'm going to provide links to good quality mid tier priced wig shops that I've bought from and outlet/discounted sites. Plus, a lot of wigs marketed towards Black women and femmes are good quality for pretty cheap as well.
Paula Young Wigs: good but not great quality at a pretty affordable price. I have multiple wigs from them and I really like them all.
The Wig Company: a bit more pricy on the whole but still good quality. I've enjoyed the few wigs I've purchased from them. Plus they have an outlet section which always includes heavily discounted wigs.
Vogue Wigs: I got my first wig from them and they have a huge selection and range of prices. They also have a rewards program which is cool.
Wig Outlet: deeply discounted high end wigs, hence the outlet. I haven't purchased any from them yet because I found even cheaper wigs of the same styles on eBay. however I have bought many of the wig models and styles sold on this sight and they are universally great quality.
Uptown Wigs: I just got my first wig from them (if you're curious it's the Textured Pixie by Sherri Shepherd). The prices are incredibly cheap and based on the reviews on the site as well as my own experience the wigs are good quality and cheap.
Sites to stay away from:
Temu. It's fast fashion and incredibly cheap. You get what you pay for. Ditto for Aliexpress and Shein.
Amazon:: this is less clear because if you know the style and color of the wig you want (ie by looking it up on other sites) then it's fine. But a lot of Amazon exclusive wigs are very cheap looking and bad quality. I've been (metaphorically) burned before by a purchase.
Fifth: You aren't "fake" or "ugly" if you wear a wig. As I said, I have full healthy hair and I started wearing wigs because I want to express myself (also because despite some complicated origins wig wearing its a Jewish women's tradition and I'm a Jewish woman) not because I "needed" to. Wig wearing or not wig wearing are both equally valid. I've seen a lot of trans femmes feeling invalidated because they have to wear a wig to let their hair grow out. First off, Audrey Hepburn wore a pixie cut and she's the height of femininity. Second, just because a wig's hair isn't coming out of your head doesn't make it any less you. Saying you're fake or not worthy for wearing a wig is literally the same thing as saying you're fake because you wear clothes. Did the dress grow out of your body? If it's ok to wear clothing and not feel fake or invalid, then why is it bad to wear a wig?
Sixth: HAVE FUN. I personally find long, loose hair boring plus it's basically a cliche for transfemmes at this point. Plus, it's not even close to the only way to be femme. As I said earlier, Audrey Hepburn wore a short pixie cut and no one ever accused her of being masculine. Experiment with different hair lengths, styles, and colors. I love having a red beehive one day, a black pixie the next day, and a red sleek bun the third. I love wigs, they make me feel like myself more than anything else. I realized I was trans because I started wearing femme wigs and realized maybe I myself was femme. I feel so much sorrow for all the ladies and themmes who feel ashamed to wear a wig, like every day they can't show their natural hair is torture. Wigs are some of my favorite things and I've had a lot of fun playing around with wigs with my friends of all genders. You are no less authentic when you wear a wig and if like me you feel MORE like yourself in a wig, there is no shame in that. Be your best self and have your best hair too!
Anyways please feel free of course to ask questions. I hope this helps.
