UPDATE Resolved!! Thank you to everyone who responded on such short notice!

I ended up placing it in my carry on and had no issues going through US security or Japanese security. Customs and immigration took like, six hours, but that was totally unrelated, haha.

ORIGINAL POST I’m leaving for Japan in less than 12 hours.

I’ll be flying from the US via United Airlines.

I want to bring my Oculus Quest 2, and according to United Airlines, it seems that I should be fine taking it along in either my checked baggage or my carry-on.

The United Airlines site says:

“You can pack personal devices that have lithium batteries of less than 100-watt hours in your checked and carry-on bags.”

This would include the Oculus Quest 2.

My problem is, at the very bottom of the section on batteries on the United Airlines page, it also says:

“The Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) has some additional restrictions on batteries and battery-operated items. For more information, see the MLIT website.”

(See https://www.mlit.go.jp/en/index.html)

My problem is, once I reach the website, I’m not sure where to go to check and see what rules there are surrounding batteries (particularly lithium ion batteries) coming into and out of the country via plane.

I’ll be staying and living in Japan for one year, so it’s not really something I could just leave behind, like if I were just going for a few weeks on vacation.

Does anyone have any idea what the rules are surrounding lithium ion batteries in Japan, particularly those in video game consoles? Have you taken your VR or game consoles into Japan with/without issue?

I’ve only got a few hours left to figure this out, so if anyone can give me some advice, I can’t tell you how much I would appreciate it!! 🙏🏻
