I had some free time lately so decided to pick a random rewatch.
I saw it when it came out, again in 2007, and then a third time yesterday. This time I wondered if it could hold up in 2022.
And for me, it does. The extravagant production is a feast for the eyes, yet Sofia's style retains the spirit of an indie filmmaker. I appreciated the subtle grain and the framing of the dining scenes where it was really stiff but emphasised finery. I don't know about historical accuracy of the costumes but they were aesthetic to me as a casual movie watcher.
Kirsten Dunst was harshly criticised by french audiences for being a skinny American while I rather liked her offbeat interpretation. Her expressions were simple but added to the story. It wasn't trying to ape history, it was doing its own thing. If I wanted authenticity i'd read nonfiction and go to museums.
The music which could have quickly dated was pleasing from today's perspective. She uses music to elevate but also to offer us enjoyment and dynamism, so it's not gratuitous.
