I finally got around to watching Midsommar today. I had nothing else going on, I was home alone, and I made sure to block out any distractions. I say this to highlight that I was fully immersed and invested in watching this movie.
Throughout the film I empathized heavily with Dani and her difficulty with controlling and expressing her emotions. She spends a lot of the film(in my perspective) trying to suppress her trauma, emotions, and the burden that it puts on everyone around her. Myself, and anyone else that struggles with anxiety and depression, would likely be able to understand these types of actions.
That being said I managed to get through the film without too much internal eruption outside of the general anxiety that a film like this produces. However, when the film ended and the camera faded from the image of Dani's ominous smile I began sobbing uncontrollably. It felt completely unfounded and seriously surprised me. It's not unheard of for me to cry during a movie, but it's usually whilst I'm experiencing empathetic emotions that I can understand. In this case I could not understand my sobbing in the moment despite the strong emotions behind it. I haven't cried like that in a long time; especially not from a movie. I'm still unpacking exactly what I experienced from the climax and resolution of Midsommar.
Have any of you ever experienced a confusing or seemingly unexplained outpouring of emotion from a film?
