Hello! My son is 11 years old and is ready to take on some more challenging films than standard family-friendly fare. Mainly, I'm looking for movies that have strong, resonant narratives, interesting philosophies/moral questions and cultural/social/ethical introspection, since we like to discuss the deeper meanings in film/narratives. Stuff that will broaden his palate for more 'advanced'/experimental film. However, I'm not stuffy! Anything sufficiently interesting/cool/funny would be great. Lately when I try to think of something cool for us to watch I just draw a blank.
To give some examples of 'grown up' films we've watched and enjoyed already; The Matrix, The Shining, Titanic, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Signs, Unbreakable, Airplane!, Lord of the Rings trilogy.
Scary stuff is okay as long as it isn't terrifying or gory. Sex is also okay so long as it isn't too explicit. Alcohol/drugs/violence is fine within reason, just nothing too mature a la Requiem for a Dream or American History X. Swearing/foul language is of no concern.
Thank you so much in advance!
