So I went to my first film festival last year - the Tallgrass Film Festival in my hometown of Wichita, Kansas. I was able to see a lot of great films but one of my favorites was Bomb City (written and directed by Jameson Brooks). It's the story of punk Brian Deneke, who was murdered with a vehicle after a skirmish between his punk pseudo-family and local jocks. He was killed by Dustin Camp (renamed Cody Cates so that the Camp family wouldn't sue) who was let off scot-free by the local court system.
This was a really well-done first film from a director that I'm now very interested in following. The performances border on over the top (and occasionally dip toes in it) but they work for the subject material and sell a story about acceptance, tolerance, and the issue of people not wanting to treat people with dignity and kindness because they're different.
