Was The Boiler Room (2000) conceived from a Friends episode?

My wife was watching a Friends episode, season 2, episode 21, "The One with the Bullies." The episode aired in 1996. I recognized Giovanni Ribisi, who plays Phoebe's brother, and Nicky Katt, who plays a bully that harasses Ross and Chandler at the coffee house. In the episode, Monica starts daytrading on the stock market.
Four years later, Ribisi and Katt go on to play stockbrokers in The Boiler Room.
It's like the Kevin Bacon game, only with fewer degrees of separation and a crazier coincidence.
