I recently rewatched Gangs of New York and for all of DDL’s theatricality in various performances, he can be beautifully subtle:
That’s the scene where he slowly describes to Leo’s character Amsterdam, basically, his life story. What he’s all about, how he’s managed to survive.
Another scene like that is the famous Jaws scene with Robert Shaw where he talks about his encounter with sharks as a WW2 soldier after his ship the USS Indianapolis was sunk in shark-infested waters:
Another one of the most famous is Marlon Brando in Apocalypse Now, relaying his visions and experiences of horror in war - the disturbing aftermath after he and his group inoculate a village - and using that to justify and rationalize his own brutality:
In all of those cases the actors are so good you feel like they’re retelling a genuine memory, you can almost even see it in their eyes.
What are some other similar ones? 4-5 minute (or however long) monologues where the actors and the writing are so good the scene just transfixes and transports you, and you can so easily visualize everything.
