I think Black Swan is a great example of this genre. Anchored by a performance for the ages by Natalie Portman, the film shows how wanting to reach the top of your field can lead you to over-obsession. The way the camera moves in the film and makes us doubt everything about Nina and her surroundings through the use of lighting and images and shadows is nothing short of an extremely well-thought out masterpiece, by one of the greatest auteurs of the century, Darren Aronofsky.
Whiplash also fits the bill, technically. Also Shutter Island and Se7en.
"Psycho" (1960) by Alfred Hitchcock: A classic of the psychological thriller genre. The film shows a slow and fascinating dive into the madness of Norman Bates
