What is the most “they directed THAT?” (in a good way) movie of all-time by an otherwise hack director?

Post Body

Inspired by a recent post by u/knicksmetsrag, here is the same question reversed. Is any director completely awful? Every mainstream director had to display some modicum of talent to make it this far in their career.

That said, what film by an otherwise hack director was so good (relative to the poor quality of the rest of their work) that you can’t believe THEY made it and why?

I’ll start… one of mine is Falling Down by Joel Schumacher, a filmmaker whose output was stubbornly meh.

TL;DR: Hack director with the best outlier picture relative to the rest of their oeuvre - who’s the filmmaker and what movie?
