Just got out of seeing The Purge Election Year (Iād give it a 5/10) and it was a price surge movie. Actually, all the movies at my theatre were surging.
I decided to suck up the $4.50 surge (New Jersey) and go. I gave my MoviePass card to the cashier and she gave me my ticket. Even though the app told me I will be charged $4.50, the ticket was printed and i didnāt have to give additional money. Sweet!
Then I proceed to go into the theatre. 5 other people were in my theatre fit for 150. This was surge pricing? Before the movie started I walked over to the adjacent movie Ant Man 2, which was also surging, to see how many people were in there. They have maybe 50 for their largest auditorium. Interesting...
I walk over then to Skyscraper, another surge movie, and they had 15 people. Those movies were already 20 minutes into it.
What is this surge pricing if the demand isnāt even there? This is a blatant move by MoviePass to deter people from going on the weekends when movies are higher priced.
I didnāt get a notification to waive the one monthly surge, but the next time I go to a movie (especially during the week) and I pay this surcharge, I expect the movie to be packed or I am cancelling.
This is no longer āunlimited movies a monthā. This is becoming a subsidized way to go to the movies.
Rant over.
