It's 2025. It's been 30 years since Captain Planet was last called.

Paul Rudd stars as Wheeler who, after 30 years, is still riding the fame of the 90s where he was a hero. Now, he ends up signing autographs at conventions and opening car dealerships. At night he hangs out at college bars, doing tricks with his fire ring for free drinks and to impress college girls, but he's become a joke of his former self. He can barely light a cigarette with his ring, and often uses magician tools to shoot fire. He overhears people making fun of him, and reluctantly leaves the bar. While leaving the bar to walk home, he gets approached by a stranger in a car about an opportunity.

Wheeler agrees to check out the opportunity, and the next day arrives in the offices on a top floor of an amazing building. Jeff Goldblum enters the room, and Wheeler looks at him confused with a sense of familiarity. After talking about how he was inspired by the Planeteers, Goldblum reveals that he used to be Verminous Skumm, one of the adversaries of the Planeteers, but after spending years in prison he's a changed man, who now goes by Vern S Coria, who now specializes in technologies and is about to launch an electric car that will change the world. Alongside the launch of the new car, he wants to get the Planeteers to be spokespeople for the launch. He offers Wheeler a long term spokesman role if he can convince the others to join in. All the other planeteers went on to become respected scientists and humanitarians, and to actually make the world a better place.

Wheeler accepts the offer, and heads off to 'get the band back together'

As the film progesses, wheeler grows as a person. Captain planet would make a brief appearance, but would ultimately not be the hero of the film.
