New player here, stuck and cant figure out how to progress.

Just created my own kingdom, and I own one dinky little castle in the corner of the map.
My new objective? Wipe out the imperials.
Easier said than done it seems because anytime I try my castle gets attacked by 1000 men and I end up losing it. Even with a garrison of 500 strong.
So, what to do? Am I going about it wrong?
