Disabling Sound Effects/ Enhancements Windows 8

I'm sure many of you have seen this tip, especially if you're looking to get a bit more performance out of the game. The thing is, on Windows 8, that check box to disable all sound effects doesn't appear to exist. Has anyone else seen this on Windows 8 or otherwise? Is there an equivalent option somewhere or is this just not available on some version of Windows or some devices?
Thanks for any help. Additional tips to boost performance much appreciated as well!
