Growler with CO2 cartridge

Been trying to save some money and I'm always back ass-wards.
Soda cans are getting more expensive so I was thinking of a soda fountain situation which is super expensive.
Now I'm thinking about buying syrup and putting it in a growler with a co2 cartridge for those rare flavors or sodas I drink a lot of.
I've never used a growler so anyone knows if this would work?
