Many good suggestions, only a little time, and I thought I was rusty. Left at 5:30 AM this morning from Alexandria. I495 was already pushy. Mostly 55 mph, but bursts to 70 mph. I had the split mind of AARRRGGHH from not being in motorcycling trim along side the usual careful, supple traffic work. Apparently my skills didn't degrade. [White Guzzi California 1400, hard cases, top case, pillon bag with backrest; white helmet, Hi-Viz jacket - so I'm quite visible and might be a cop]. I66 W thinned out a good deal, past Gainesville onto cruise control at 73 mph. But the temperature dropped from 49 to 43, which put it below my fingertip comfort level! Stopped at Cracker Barrel (long delay) for bad coffee and grub. Gassed up. Last of my Illinois winter gas.
Skyline Drive was going to be $25 and only 2/3 open. Screw that! Headed S on 340 (one of my favorites from long ago), then on wonderful 619 to the W, rolling and with curves. Hit 678 through Fort Valley - just an amazing world inside Massanutten Mountain. This is a syncline with the most interesting eroded out interior. Must look up what it is - different topography.
Intersected 675, which I took out to the east. Now this is a super road. Very little traffic, nice curves, even a real 5 mph hairpin! Loads of fun with the torque of the big Guzzi. I'm pretty laid back, but ended up with almost no chicken strips. Stopped at the top, where a hang glider launch area has been cut out. Amazing view of the Blue Ridge. Guy pulled up on a Versys 650, and fell over. Nice! No damage. Experienced feller, just didn't quite get the kickstand locked in place. Versys are that way.
Down into Luray. What a nice drop, not too pushy. I'll do it the other direction next time. Through Luray, 211 out of town and over Thornton Gap. Picture by the Appalachian Trail. It's much straightened and "improved" compared to the 1970s! 211 all the way to Warrenton, mostly on cruise control at 58 mph.
Coffee and a snack in Warrenton city center. Nice town. Had an old lady (my age most likely) staring at my bike. She told me about her boy friend who had a Guzzi 30 years ago. I really wanted to put her on the back. She was cute, for an old lady.
From Warrenton, got a bit lost, but ended up jogging over to 28 N at Bealeton. Wonder whether the plane show is still there. I flew in a Tiger Moth biplane! I took 28 to get to 619 at Bristow. Now this is a road! The last half is as nice to ride as anything I've been on. Just nice turns and dips, set up, tip in, roll on, engine brake, set up, tip in . . . great pace road! I95, jumped over to US 1, then to GW Parkway & home.
Mabye 225 miles? One full tank in the middle, from Front Royal all the way to Route 1. 154 miles at 38 mph average, with 38.7 mpg. I must have rolled on a good deal of throttle, normally the mileage is in the 40s!
Fort Valley, 675, and 619 were exceptional, and 211 covers miles while being interesting. Left at 5:30, got home a bit after 4. Lots of breaks & sight seeing!
I'm going to run out to 675 again, and keep it going west into W Va. There's a big loop out there. I'm also planning on Harpers Ferry/Sharpsburg and a big loop with Gettysburg.
And the bike is finally running well. Not quite a perfect idle - I'll check the valves. They're often out a little, and it's very sensitive.
Thanks for all the suggestions folks.
