What gas octane do I use?

In looking over my manual it says to use 91 Octane or higher, I've been using 87 for 5 months now (didn't have the manual till a month ago, had to find it online, this is my first bike). Is that bad for the engine? Am I missing out in more HP? What problems can I have if I continue using 87 Octane? Can I use 89?
This is for a 94 Honda Magna 750 V4
