I came across a video on Facebook showing a motorcycle accident from the riders POV. You could see on his dash that his max speed was 43mph, which is not fast at all considering he was in a city, and the limit was likely between 35-45 based on how the road looked. He's not flying by any means. In the video, a car from the oncoming direction makes a left hand turn directly in front of him, and stops midway through the turn. He swerves and dodges it, but goes into some grass where he lays the bike down. To any reasonable person, the driver was clearly at fault for failing to yield. Surely the people in the comments agree, right? Wrong.
Every single top comment is ragging on the rider in some form to try and place the blame on them, and so are many of the replies. These comments have hundreds and even thousands of likes. Their reasoning? He was speeding. Some of them just knew that the speed limit in this particular area was 25mph despite no signs being in the video, and some even used complex mathematics (AKA bullshittery) to determine the speed of the oncoming vehicles to be much lower than the riders, therefore the limit is 25. It just had to be the riders fault, and thousands of people agreed.
In reality, he was clearly not riding at an excessive speed. You could see his speed on the dash clear as day, but why look there when we can just blindly assume he was going 90mph? He's a biker, so he must be the asshole. They also had no way of knowing the speed limit of the area, yet numerous people declared with confidence that the speed limit was 25mph in the middle of a city. The driver failed to yield to oncoming traffic which instantly puts them at fault, but the average Facebook user knows better. The rider is always at fault, even when they're not.
So many people have decided that they dont like motorcyclists for no actual reason, and then they fabricate information or ignore what they see with their own eyes to support that conclusion. The number of people who think this way is startling.
Much like when people get angry, jelling, honking and closing gaps when a motorcyclist tries to move up front lane splitting despite it being legal…there’s always one asshole in high traffic environments…best option is to ramp up awareness when riding and avoid city traffic as much as possible!
