Hey y'all,
Some of this will be a big "duh" for a good many of you. Others may draw from my experience and not have to repeat my mistakes I hope!
I took a spill today cornering in the rain and slid about fifteen feet. Luckily wet denim and my boots saved my legs but my forearm got pretty shredded. I didn't have a moto jacket on and learned a good lesson today. Moving forward my commutes will be hot, but safe. I was also guilty of not putting a helmet on to go down the road for groceries in the past, those days are over.
That being said, I patched myself up with what I had on the bike after irrigating the wound as best I could with my water bottle. When I got home about an hour later the dressing was dry and hurt more than the actual aquiring of the wound to change (think peeling off a scab on a grander scale but it's also full of sand, cotton fibers and dried blood)
Long story short I went in my first aid stuff at home and dug into the burn supplies. After a light debriding and sanitizing I now have petroleum impregnated dermal gauze on my arm and let me tell you, this stuff is going on my bike. It's soothing, but more importantly it won't dry to the wound.
Tl;Dr
Wear your gear, buy petroleum gauze and keep it on your bike.
