Clutch cable extremely loose 85 virago 700

Hello, I'm trying to figure out the fix for this. I was riding and the clutch lever had like a snap to it and became loose. I was able to tighten down that adjusting screw and that gave it tension again so I rode it home. I tried to go for a ride and it happened again but this time the shaft that the adjustment screws in has a lot of free play. Anybody know how to fix this? Or will I need a new one.
