I've almost finished writing a book that while not explicitly LDS, is technically LDS fiction. And it's a fantasy novel.
I've not read a lot of Card. But I've read enough to see deeply thought-provoking themes with the occasional LDS reference (like the D&C quote in "Ender's Game").
But whereas Card had thought-provoking themes, I'm not sure he's taken them in the direction I have.
My novel is a love letter to exaltation. I take a "hope"-based approach (as the novel is set in a world filled with demons, who were all once men), and my main character is filled with a power based on hope. He once says, in a heartwrenching moment, that he wishes he were a god. And he was taught growing up that gods were beings of perfect hope.
The whole novel explores his journey from young man to adult within a brief span of time. He learns so much about the world, and most of all, how to change it. My readers' expectations of how this world should change might be shattered on several occasions.
There are tense and dramatic scenes, there are moments that push the genre, and there are even prayer scenes (in which my main character prays to the god in charge of the earth he is on, AKA an exalted being).
I have a great book. But I also have a high chance of isolating my non-LDS (and some of my LDS) audience. Would you read this? Do you know what kind of audience I should target once it's complete?
I know there's Shadow Mountain and Tor, among other publishers. But those two stand out to me as the most likely to publish me. Does anyone know of any resources to find out? I mean, I have one LDS friend (a friend of my father's) that I sometimes run stuff by, but he favors my humorous writes (and isn't much of a critic). He's been a profound example on me, even if my writing hasn't been directly benefited by him.
He would have no idea of how to help. That's why I turn to you guys.
