Upgrading from points to cdi: whole new electrical system?
Post Body

Hey yall, I'm a first-time moped owner and occasional mechanical tinkerer with my truck and 2016 yamaha bike, but definitely new to reworking electrical systems or restoring mopeds. I've recently bought a 1981(?) Honda hobbit project bike im trying to revive, and I've got some questions/need some advice regarding whether to pull the old, incomplete points electrical system and replace with cdi.

The situation: the moped is physically in good condition, but weird. - No Vin on the frame that I could find, engine number would indicate that the engine is from a different year than I was told the bike was, but the seller said he had just rebuilt the engine so he could of installed a different one either from a different hobbit or from a warehouse?

  • No headlight installed though a generic headlight was included in the deal.

-No turn signals or tail light.

-the flywheel installed is for the CDI hobbit setup, but I'm positive it has points ignition.

-wiring harness is currently a mess.. Half of the wires no longer have destinations :p

My biggest hurdle, I think, is going to be getting the electrical system rigged out. As it stands, I've got too many unknowns (will it work right with the CDI flywheel? Without being plugged into all the lights?) and what I'd really like to do is just scrap the whole thing and take it from the ground up.. They've got Cdi conversion kids on treatland for like $250 that I'm looking at, but what I'd like to know from foks who may be more experienced with this is this: if I switch to CDI will that mean that I'm building a whole new electrical system? Or do I incorporate it into the wiring harness that's already there? Would it strike yall as less work than trying to get my existing mess of a system sorted out? Takes, advice, opinions are all super welcome, I'm kinda aimless currently.

Thanks for reading!
