Yeah, DeSantis ran a terrible campaign that tried to walk the non-existent line of being both pro-Trump and anti-Trump.
He tried to campaign on being like Trump without the liabilities, but also tried to defend Trump on his liabilities.
Both DeSantis and Haley needed to hit Trump hard and early, but everyone was so afraid of alienating his supporters that they just let him waltz into a win.

It's an interesting point, although "not convicted" is the status quo.
In theory a "not guilty" could be seen as an exoneration, so i get your question, but given that the burden is on the state to prove something, winning doesn't mean innocence is proven, it just means guilt wasn't proven.
