Hey, suburban Texan here.
This just isn't a major issue unless you're watching sensational news stations.
We have a problem, but it's not the crisis you're describing.
Like, if i didn't read the news and just lived my life, i would not be aware that there even was a migrant problem and I live in the alleged epicenter of it.
It isn't about border crossings, the "illegal aliens"...that's not the problem, the problem is the asylum system.
The asylum system is under resourced and way beyond max capacity.
Also, i live in south Texas, this just isn't a problem that's actually resulting in any real issues... we're not overwhelmed with immigrants, our crime isn't out of control. The news is making it seem like it's a crisis, but it's just not.
There are problems and we should fix them, but this is mostly political theater.
The irony is you are asserting that Biden is the one using this for political gain, which ignores that the GOP have been exaggerating for decades about the "crisis" for political points while doing absolutely nothing to solve it.
Great point.
ETA: I think in doing so that they're pushing back on the premise of the ruling that got handed down, but I think they should challenge it legally as you are suggesting they're doing....and I'm not sure they're going to challenge it legally before taking action.
SCOTUS ordered that Border Patrol does have the authority to cut the razor wire that Texas installed. (More specifically, they overrulled the 5th circuit which had put a pause on that practice.)
Now you'll say to me "that's not a SCOTUS opinion directed at Texas actions"....but yes it is, in context.
Texas has been physically preventing Border Patrol from accessing the border to cut the razor wire, this order tells Texas that Border Patrol has that authority, which is an implicit order on Texas' actions.
You can't just look at the legal issue and ignore the context....the context of the case is that Texas is preventing Border Patrol from cutting the wire and SCOTUS said they do have that authority.
Now, there will be further legal maneuvering and results, but that's what we have so far.
I overstated or oversimplified, it's probably a matter of perspective.
SCOTUS's order is narrow, but based on a broader premise (federal supremacy on the matter of border control). To the best of my knowledge, Abbott has not directly ignored the narrow premise.
However, he is pushing back on the broader premise (which seems to ignore the point of SCOTUS, even if not the law).
After that order, Abbott declared an invasion and promised to continue to resist the federal government, insisting the state will intervene in federal matters. They're messaging that they'll continue to defy the federal government, even after being told by SCOTUS that they should not be interfering.
So while I agree that he's not ignoring the law of SCOTUS, he's ignoring the point of SCOTUS' ruling.

If they're not ignoring SCOTUS at all, someone should tell them, because the GOP is aligning with Abbott in messaging that they'll ignore the Supreme Court.
So which part of the ruling is Texas saying they're going to ignore?
