Help with planning layout

Hello! I'm kind of new to model railroading and currently, I am struggling with designing my layout. I've watched a bunch of YouTube videos, looked at photos, other people's layouts, etc., but I'm unable to figure out where to start. I know I need it to be modular, so I can move it easier, but I don't want it to be boring to the point where I can't run my trains as I've made that mistake before.
Any suggestions on what to do/where to start?
