Dad left me his model train

Hello All, my dad left me his model train set from when he was a kid. If I remember correctly he said it may need a new power source. I know absolutely nothing about model trains but my wife thinks it would be cute to set it up around the Christmas tree. I think it is O scale. Three lines on the tracks. Any advice on where I should start to learn more and figure out what I need to get it set up and running. Thanks in advance.
