Hi all!
First of all, English is not my first language so I apologise if anything I say is difficult to read.
I've been building airplane models for about a year now and I really enjoy it. Recently, I also got into building tanks, which I enjoyed even more than airplanes. However, I'm now looking into expanding into car models as well. I'm using Tamiya and Ammo MIG products, since this is what's available at the store I'm shopping from, and I've got a portable airbrush that I've managed to use for everything (it's not the best, but it's satisfactory enough for me).
I've got a couple of questions that I was hoping you guys can answer (and explain like I'm 5 if possible):
- When would I need to use lacquer paints, and when would I be fine just going with a gloss acrylic paint?
- Do I need a special type of primer for lacquer paints?
- What sort of colour should the primer be? I know that I should use white for a hot colour, but when should black/gray be used? I've only used Tamiya's Gray primer so far.
- How much should I thin Tamiya lacquer paints? I know that a special thinner is needed for them, I saw people recommending Mr. Color Levelling Thinner.
- Is my cheap portable airbrush suitable for spraying lacquer paints?
- Why do some people sand after priming, and then prime/paint again? I saw this in some YouTube videos, but I haven't been able to find an explanation. I have absolutely no clue how repainting a cars works IRL.
- Can I use Tamiya Extra Thin Cement for everything, or are there cases when I should use super glue?
- What are some common pitfalls or things I should be weary of when building car models?
Thanks and have a happy new year!
