Mariano Rivera has a lot of saves, which you say is a garbage stat, why should he be in the HoF then?
K-Rod is still the top 5 in all time saves. But no youāre right, heās not a HoFer.
But the point is that WAR isnāt and shouldnāt be the only metric being used to get into the HoF. Itās a baseline metric to compare players at a glance.
It should have some sort of weight yea, but Iām not saying that basis alone is a reason to be in the HoF. I didnāt even remember he won back to back.
My point is that a higher WAR alone doesnāt get you in the hall either. Iām sure Josh Gibson gets beat out by a lot of other players on that metric alone. But heās in the HoF for numerous reasons, not WAR.
Being injured makes you shit? Huh tell me how that works. DeGrom has a career ERA of 2.53 while Lincecum inflated to 3.74 so Iām not sure why you brought him into the mix but okay.
Please do a pitcher comparison of DeGrom, Scherzer, Verlander, and Kershaw. If you compare the WAR and only use that, then Kershaw makes it for sure but everyone else is questionable, by your standards. Back to back Cy Young awards isnāt in your WAR calculation, and Iām sure something like that warrants being in the HoF
Is that Rollins on borderline I see?? I barely remember/recognize like half of these players because of when I started watching baseball so bear with me please haha.
But Rollins is another one that makes his case because of his defense as well. Silver slugger once and four gold gloves, and heās got a WS ring right? Iād say thatās enough, maybe not the first time through but still.
Juicing jail ššš
Nope. And Iām tired of seeing all these people get hard ons for WAR and using only that metric
I wasnāt aware WAR accounted for defense, the last definition I had seen may have been in reference to bWAR or fWAR, something that didnāt account for defense. I appreciate you not being a dick about telling me Iām wrong. I like learning new things lol
But yea for me, WAR is a problem metric when using it for HoF. And itās just a metric. Itās helpful when comparing players at a glance, but itās not the only metric or aspect of the game that gets you into the HoF. Iām tired of people acting like itās the best and only way to compare players or say theyāre HoFers.
Well thatās why heās got the higher WAR, different positions weighted differently. Same reason why Eclersley is in. WAR isnāt the end all be all star either though, it takes out everything of who the player is, how they play, and just makes it super math based. Doesnāt take into account record breaking season stats or anything like that. Take out all those saves and innings Rivera had as a closer and what is he? A really, really good reliever, maybe the best, sure. But did he win a Cy Young for relief like Mike Marshall? Just about all the relievers in the HoF are āclosersā and for them, saves matter.
That still shouldnāt be any reason to not get into the HoF. I wonāt get into the awards, but if we arenāt going to reward all of that, the stats, and the attitude he had when playing the game, then is it really just based off who the best hitter or pitcher is? Surely there are much more forgettable players than Pedey in the Hall.
Iām going to be really disappointed if Dustin Pedroia never gets into the HOF. He had the offense, was consistent with it too, played the hardest 162 Iāve ever seen, dirt dog, great defense. And he has the hardware to back it up. Iām kinda tired of defense getting slept on or overlooked. It matters. It can be the difference between a win and a loss, even just one play.
So many people are quick to go to WAR but it never tells the full story. Finally glad to see someone else sees things similarly
WAR isnāt the best judgement for this kind of thing though. It doesnāt take into account for defense. So many times I see player comparisons and the higher war player isnāt necessarily the better all around player.

So setting the single season save record for MLB and being in top 5 for the only stat that matters for closers isnāt enough to be a HoFer?
