Amateur engineer here. I recorded a short 1 minute instrumental as recording practice not long ago and have not been able to get the sound im looking for. The mix I find sounds generally roomy while I am trying to get a more direct professional sound. It always comes out sounding like someone recorded a live show from their phone.

Now the obvious thing that comes to mind is the room I recorded in, it is a very big room in my house that essentially connects to all other parts of the house. The dimensions are very weird to explain and there is a lot of weird shapes in the room but generally it is about 60 feet long and 25 feet tall. I am going for a more shoegaze alt sound so I am honestly trying to blend in as much reverb as possible without ruining the mix too much so this combined would in theory make a very roomy sound.

Problem is that I don't have many rooms avaliable to record in and the rest of them are very small, about 8 feet tall and 13 feet long.

Any advice on acheiving a more direct, punchy, close sound?

If anyone asks I will give more details on the recording and mixing as well as inspirations.

Edit: Thanks to everyone for the helpful and kind input. I listened to everyone and adjusted the mix to taste and while I still think my general mixing abilities are not very good this thread helped a lot. heres the updated mix and feel free to comment on it as well
