I am Indian and Mexican mixed but I grew up both in the US and India but I’ve never been to Mexico. My adolescent years were in India so I understand Indians more than I do with Mexican or Latin Americans in general. I think my looks also plays a part here because I look more like my dad than my mom who is Mexican.
When I’m around Indians I am desperate to tell them I’m Indian just so I could get along in circle but not knowing to speak the language puts them off. I’ve had similar experience with Latin Americans as well.
As long as I’m with someone who doesn’t ask about my ethnicity I feel great but when you get close to them it’s not an issue with non Indian mostly. That’s pretty much has been my experience so far. Also being a gay man puts me in a completely different space.
How do you guys deal with the ambiguity being mixed and the imposter syndrome that comes with it?
