For many not familiar with the Delta, especially the South Delta, the geographical and socioeconomic realities can be confusing. As an Anguilla native, I tell people I’m from Rolling Fork. So do most throughout the county. The only grocery store (which has regained power) is located there. The 2 dollar stores are there (one was completely destroyed). 3 of the 4 gas stations ( one destroyed) are there. When Rolling Fork was hit the entire county was crippled. Mayersville, the county seat of Issaquena county has one small gas station. No grocery’s that I’m currently aware of.
These 2 counties share almost everything. The library system, public and private schools, the now condemned hospital. The health dept.
Everything else comes from 45 miles NW, SE or S in Greenville, Yazoo City and Vicksburg. Basically an hour away from everything. We have no stoplights. No National chain stores or restaurants. Of course that is a much bigger issue now with destroyed cars and a diminished fuel supply.
We are greatly appreciative for all of the help we are and will receive. Please know we’re more than just Rolling Fork. It’s like our capital.
The 2 counties are among the least populated and poorest in the nation. They are both classified as food deserts. Don’t forget the other communities in the South Delta.
