Philadelphia is a city with a perpetual inferiority complex. Even with our honored history, we have always basked in the shadows of other nearby cities like Boston, New York, and D.C. Our tough and gritty demenors are often taken as off putting. We are a city of forever underdogs and our nature reflects this. We fight, we scrap, we get knocked down, but we always rise. This is why what I saw Sunday struck a familiar cord.
Case keenum, Adam Thielen, Stefon Diggs, all names that should have been thrown into the trash heap of sports history as fleeting pawns in a greater battle that is the NFL. Yet through sheer grit and determination, they clawed their way back into relevance. And when I saw that image of Keenum leading a stadium, a city, a nation in an epic chant, I can say I felt nothing but sheer joy. Apparently Rocky is from Abeline and plays in MN.
Two teams with tragic histories will meet in one week for a chance at redemption. Two warriors too brave to show fear, too proud to quit even after half a century of failure, and all too eager to taste the spoils of victory.
This will be a smash mouth, no holds barred fight to the death. Of course I want my team to win. But who ever leaves victorious from the hollowed grounds of the linc, my only wish is that they make it to the promised land. From one desperate nation to another, seize this opportunity. Invoke the memories of our fallen warriors not strong enough to finish the task and put the demons to rest once and for all. And when one of us reaches the gates of Valhalla, leave a seat at the great hall for the warrior still finding his way.
May the eagles fly high.
Skol.
