a little advice for basing minis

Post Body

So I'm not exactly new to painting but I'll be honest I have never put much thought into basing. I always feel like I have to paint the mini before I know what base I want it on.

So I've just got my ork combat patrol together for 40k and I'm painting up the lads and I just thought damn I wish I made cool bases for them. But I've already glued them all down.

So, is there a good way to remove a mini from it's base to rebase it? Or are you able to get a good base while it's still attached? Every tutorial I've seen has the base done before the model is stuck on.

At the risk of rambling a bit, in the past all my bases have been using citadel texture paints (mostly martian ironcrust) and then dry brushing some bleach bone, or painting it earthy brown and giving it a good wash to make it muddy. For my necrons I did brown painted ironcrust and dry brushed leadbelcher and it looked like some pretty nifty metallic dirt.
