How is priming minis on the sprue?

Post Body
Normally I fully assemble my minis and then prime (grey with zenithol highlight is my personal preference), or on occasion do a sub-assembly & prime for more intricate models. I've never tried sprue priming but I know some people swear by it and the method seems to carry a lot of pros.
So, how do people like it? What do you do for the unpainted bits from where it was attached to the frame? Is it worth trying or is it a waste of time?
