Alternatives to scenic bases?

Title. Basically I want to pick the brains of my fellow painters to see if anyone has an idea what sort of basing I should do. I don't like scenic bases, I'm part of the "What if they're in a different terrain?" camp. I liked clear acrylic bases but they scratch easily and become dull etc.

Currently my frostgrave warbands and D&D minis are on a mix of clear acrylic bases and flat dark gray painted bases.

So I'm wondering if anyone has a good idea about an alternative way to base miniatures or maybe something obvious I'm just overlooking. Again I don't want to do scenic bases.

Thanks in advance for all of your help!
