I cant stop thinking about how the echo compass leads you to your last death location, so the shard echoes the past a bit in a way.
Itd be cool if adding an echo shard to a map could help lead you to finding the dig sites that will come with the Archaeology update (whenever that'll be).
It'll add to the use of the shard in a way that connects to its use as of now, through its ability to sense past situations.
