Keyboard unresponsiveness in text-bar and UI's?

I'm having an issue with MC on and off for about a year now, where I'm unable to type in the chat bar or the UI for structure blocks/book&quill/command blocks, etc.

Outside these cases the number keys still allow me to select items on the hot-bar and all keys bound to letters still work, like F to swap current and off-hand items.

It doesn't happen every time I start the game, but once it does happen I have to close the game and re-launch to fix it. Re-loading the world has no effect, nor does switching between worlds.

Any advice?
