"After all, why not? Why shouldn't I do it?" The story of a Mitchell Mauser
Post Body

I'm the not so very ashamed owner of a Mitched up K98. Blonde stock, asterisk on the receiver, and a bolt in the white. The safety doesn't work, which tells me it absolutely has forced-matching numbers. I know I paid too much for it, but I paid what I was willing to pay for it at the time so I sleep just fine. I did some stock bedding and accurizing and it is a pretty darn good shooter. So here's what I'd like to do to it, just for my own amusement

1) I'd like to reblue the bolt. Does anyone have insight how to do this properly?

2) Was this blonde color stock ever appropriate, or just a Mitch-ism? If so, has anyone restored their stock to a more appropriate finish?

3) I'll likely never afford a real k98 sniper variant. I will buy another more correct k98 someday. It sounds like there are actually good resources out there for faux-sniper builds, and also some bad ones. If I were to do it to any rifle, I feel like this would be the one with the lowest guilt factor. If you've done it, id like to hear your recommendations and warnings. For gunsmithing abilities, I give myself a solid 5 out of 10.

My goal is not to swindle someone with a clevery forgery. My goal is to have a neat representation in my little museum that I can enjoy at the range.
