40% is pretty decent though. You have the overhead of the product itself, the distribution, etc. The popcorn is reasonably priced too, so there isn't a whole lot of profit to be made. I am sure the popcorn sold in grocery stores has less than 40% profit for the stores.

That's the biggest bullshit part of it. The girls get hardly anything out of the sales. At least in Cub Scouts, the boys get 50% of all sales of meat sticks and about 40% of the popcorn IIRC. But yes, donations are always accepted, and make sure to do CASH donations, because then they get 100% of the cash, vs. transaction fees and girl scouts overhead taking a cut. Even handing the girls a $5 bill gets them more than buying 10 boxes of cookies.
