Itโs not Windows, but itโs the other Microsoft OS. Not their latest Linux builds, but Xenix of yore.
It was a nice, little 16-bit UNIX.
There are lots of 16-bit microcontrollers and heck, the 8086 is making a return in the form of these tiny little 8086 notebooks.
ELKS, MINIX, FUZIX should all be options for 16-bit UNIX-lite experience on elderly, neovintage tech, and itty bitty embedded tech.
But only Xenix is UNIX.
It can be refactored and brought up to speed, Microsoft has oodles of immensely talented engineers.
Releasing a modernized 16-bit UNIX for like 6-8 embedded CPU and elderly CPU chipsets with SSH and windowing when needed; as well as a package manager? Beautiful for those tiny retro workstations.
And hey, DOSBOX with their open source DOS 4 could run extra vintage games.
Cost? MSFT probably have a non-profit where this work could be done and they get a tax break, etc.
Alrighty anyway. LARP over.
