Alright crew, I need some advice.
I'm currently on my second grow right now, doing three Blue Dream autos. About a month ago as the ladies were starting to move into mid-flower, I noticed the first signs of two-spotted spider-mite infestation. I think they came in via a regular houseplant I bought around that time. It was never near my grow room, but I probably transferred them carelessly over on my hands or clothes. Anyways I did a bunch of research and tried by best to take care of them or at least keep them at bay until harvest. Here's what I've done since discovering the mites:
Lowered temperatures, raised humidity, and increased airflow - pointed fan more directly at plants and eventually moved beneath canopy.
Alternated treatments of this organicide that I already had and some Spinosad that I bought. Full spraydowns every 3-5 days over about 2.5 weeks. Put Spinosad in the feed solution a couple times too.
Bleach solution wipedown of tent interior, surrounding floor space, and all equipment that comes in contact with plants after first organicide treatment and again after last.
Additional spraydown with a 1 to 9 solution of isopropyl and water, which I saw suggested online. I don't recommend this, it wasn't supposed to damage the plants but it did a real number on them, the next morning the leaves were completely speckled with burns everywhere the spray hit. It did seem to keep the mites in check for a few more days though.
After that I was getting into late flower and didn't want to use any more chemicals, but I've been spraying under the leaves with cold water every few days to at least try and knock them off/disrupt them.
The only things I didn't try were diatomaceous earth, since I understood it to be more of a preventative measure than a solution, and ladybugs, cause I was really hoping to take care of this without introducing any other life to the indoor ecosystem. I wish I'd done both now, cause these devilspawn don't go away for anything. I kept their pop low for a while, but since I've stopped the serious stuff they're getting worse than ever, and now I need some help deciding whether/how to move forward with harvest.
Here is what the plants look like now: 1 2
Here are some attempts at close-ups of the trichs: 1 2
And here's a look at the infestation: 1 2
The infested leaf I'm showing here is by far the worst I've found yet, but I'm sure there are others in a similar state. Today is the first time I've noticed webbing, which is why I'm finally asking for help.
So, now my questions: How much longer should I wait to harvest at this point? The buds look pretty well developed, I'm on day 66 since planting the seeds, and my lower fan leaves are starting to yellow out, so they've gotta be close, but I don't see any amber in the trichs yet and they don't look totally cloudy either. If I didn't have the mites, I'd probably try to go another 1.5 to 2 weeks, but given the state of things, should I just chop now and cut my losses? Any tips for keeping the mites at bay for a bit longer without affecting safe smokability? Is it too late already and I need to just scrap the whole grow?
And if I do chop, (presumably this week) any tips from there? I was thinking a wet trim to get the majority of plant matter out of the way asap. Probably should do the hang-drying process in another room altogether, instead of the tent like usual. Do I need to worry about them just continuing to thrive on the buds during/after that?
Finally, how about making sure they don't come back for future grows? I understand they live on chlorophyll, so if I bleach-wipe the tent and grow room and keep all plant life out of there for a month or so, will they just all starve off and leave me good to go? Or will the little fuckers hibernate or something and pop right back out when I start a new cycle no matter how long I wait? My grow room is also partially a storage room, do I need to worry about them staying alive on cardboard boxes or something? Ugh this has been such a mess. BE CAREFUL ADOPTING NEW HOUSEPLANTS PEOPLE! And thanks for discussing with me. If my pictures are not sufficient for anyone, I can try and take more.
TLDR; I've been fighting back spider mites for about a month, and I'm getting close to a potential harvest. Need help figuring out when to chop and how to make sure bud is safe to consume.
