1-pheny-2l-propanone aka phenylacetone aka P2P aka benzyl methyl ketone aka BMK is a synthetic ketone that is used as a precursor in the synthesis of many drugs including amphetamine and methamphetamine(and a human metabolite of both drugs) and is registered on the USA National Drug Registry under the highest category of restricted substances "Schedule I" when it was listed under the Reagan administration in the early 80s for its role in clandestine laboratories. This means it has no accepted use in medicine under any circumstances.

This makes P2P a more heavily restricted chemical in the US than both methamphetamine and amphetamine, both of which are listed as "Schedule II" due to both drugs having accepted medical uses and prescription brand and generic preparations still in use today. P2P is not in and of itself psychologically active in humans; and sees use only in pharmaceutical labs for the purpose of synthesizing certain formulations of amphetamine and methamphetamine which arguably makes it medically useful.. but I'm not a lawyer
