Welcome to Metal Guitar's first Riff Challenge! I am your host and newest moderator.

Your goal is to write a new lick, riff, composition, song, or whatever you feel like that matches this week's theme and pushes you to the best of your abilities.

This week's theme is THRASH METAL.

Simply record yourself on whatever means you have available whether that's your phone, a video, or a professional DAW, and upload it as a comment below. In addition, take some time to check out other users' submissions and offer them encouragement and constructive advice, as well as ask them questions.

Q&A:

Why do this? To push each of us to write more and higher-quality riffs, to help us practice in genres that may be outside our comfort zone, to generate more activity in this subreddit, and to bring the community together.

Where did you get this idea? This thread started by u/hugocapelobl plus my own desire to see something like this happen here.

Can I include more than just me playing guitar, such as vocals, drums, etc.? If you're feeling inspired, that's great and fine to include in your submission, just keep in mind that r/metalguitar focuses on guitar, while other subs such as r/metalmusicians are more inclusive of the music process.

How often will these riff challenges be? Approximately every week or every two weeks depending on community interest and how much free time I have to make the challenges.

What if I don't want to participate or I don't have the time a particular week? That is fine; this is more like Khan Academy than regular school - participate simply when you'd like.

What if I have trouble thinking of a riff in this week's theme? Idk man just play what feels like the theme is for you.

What if I have suggestions on running this challenge or on future themes? Feel free to let me know. The suggestion box [IS] currently accepting new suggestions.

Can I be an asshole and tell people their riffs suck and they should stop playing guitar? No, that is grounds for comment removal and other mod action.
