help me understand MGS 2 . ( possible spoilers )

What's the story with MGS 2. More specifically did the events of MGS2 actually happen in real life ( post snake, tanker intro level) especially towards the end of the story with the colonel going crazy over the codec. I have a lot of questions so bear with me .

I've even played MGS 2 myself and read a few wikis but idk. At first it seems like the raiden sequence in MGS 2 seems like a simulation of some kind .

What happens to raiden after the events of MGS 2 ? . Where did Raiden even come from ? Why is it that Raiden was chosen for this mission ?
