Connection between Cahokia and Mesoamerica?

So I just finished watching a documentary about Cahokia and I saw a lot of familiarities, namely big pyramids, decent amount of human sacrifice, and maize being an important part of their diet. I was wondering if this has ever been remarked about by scholars or is it just a coincidence kinda thing? If this is a simpletons question please forgive my ignorance, I do not know much about the region.
