ā€----------

For over forty years people with disabilities have been campaigning for the same access to transport as everyone else, but we still have a very long way to go.

Previous governments have not kept their promises to the disability community. TheĀ Disability Discrimination Act (1992)Ā requires that all infrastructure is fully compliant with theĀ Standards for Accessible Public Transport 2002Ā (DSAPT) by 31 December 2022.

Thatā€™s less than 300 days away.Ā And we are woefully behind. Only 15% of Melbourneā€™s Tram Network is accessible, and buses, trains, and taxis across regional Victoria fail daily to meet the needs of residents with disabilities.Ā Ā  And itā€™s not just the disability community that will benefit from universal access. Parents with prams, older Victorians, and people wishing to avoid increasing traffic congestion will all reap the rewards of these upgrades.Ā

A commitment from the state government to deliver universal access in the next term of government would contribute to our economic recovery and deliver a more comfortable, efficient Public Transport system for all Victorians. It would also help Victoria meet its commitment to halve emissions by 2030.

[A personal note: I'm sharing this here in the hopes that more people will be informed about the protests and be reminded of the need for them. The fight for disability rights is something that I feel continues to pass under most people's radar despite it being so integral to allowing a great many people to live their lives.

I am planning to go along to one of the protests today and figured I'd also do my best to try spread the word.

Public transport should be accessible for all. It's as simple as that. Let's make it happen.]
