Hi all! I’m considering moving back to Melbourne after 12 years in Montreal. My girlfriend, who’s a Canadian of Indian and African descent, has some concerns about Australia’s reputation for racism. I’d like to hear from people of color in Melbourne. What have your experiences been? How do they compare to other cities you’ve spent time in? She’s worried less about racist abuse, more about things like snide comments on the train, off jokes from people who think they’re being edgy or funny, general ignorance, and discrimination in hiring, that sort of thing.
