So I posted this as a comment in an earlier thread from several days ago. But I realized I might be able to get some answers for my situation if I posted. So here goes:
I work with an MLT generalist on the evening shift. He screws up in every department in various ways. Gram Dtains he does have to be reviewed by another tech. He’s not allowed to retype units in BB (he was caught sink testing), he doesn’t know how to do dilutions properly in Chemistry and constantly turns out results that are blatantly off or fishy, his diffs are atrocious in Hem, even screws up UA. Any time we point out an error, or point out that’s he’s not doing something g right, he just laughs it off. He also relays bad information to people who call. Tells them tests are running even when not even collected, reported the wrong results to reference labs, etc.
Only it’s worse because my Director and her boss are entirely in the loop of how terrible he is. They just refuse to do anything. Our interim Director (when current had to go in emergency leave for a month) was essentially told he’d have to cause someone’s death in order for him to be fired.
We’re all at a loss. It’s affected moral, and even everyone else’s work ethic. We’re told to just keep writing him up and documenting all of the errors...but aside from covering our own asses, we don’t see the point any more.
I know our location is a deterrent for hiring, but we can’t look for anyone until he’s fired. Until that happens we’re putting patients’ lives and our reputation at risk. The only good thing is that the only work he’ll do is what we literally point out and tell him to do.
Pretty par for the course here. They’ll hire anyone, and then hold onto them regardless of how bad they are. Refuse to fire, regardless of the mistakes they make. We just don’t know what else to do.
