How to Read Hydrometer

Post Body

So I'm making my first batch of mead. It's been fermenting for about 8 weeks. All seems well, lots of sediment, bubbling went for about a month and then stopped, and no mold. However, I didn't know that I was supposed to take a gravity reading before stowing it away. I found someone online say that if I take a reading 2 weeks apart and it remains the same, then it's done fermenting and I can bottle it without really worrying about bottle bombs. However, my gravity reading is below the 1.0 which I haven't seen anyone else's be before. It was .99 3 ticks. I'm not even sure what that is since it's still below the 1.0.

In addition, I was under the impression that I'd be unable to calculate the ABV % since I didn't take an initial reading. However the back of my hydrometer has an ABV % reading. Does that mean anything?

Thanks for any help!!
