Starter Motor Replacement

Post Body
Just got my car back from a transmission rebuild yesterday. Drove fine from the shop to a couple of errands & home. Today, drove it to a store approximately 12 mins away with no issues. Then tried to start it and wouldn’t crank. Thought because the tranny shop had it for so long, the battery had been low. Tried to get it to jump, but nothing. BCAA came out and tapped the starter it and I was able to get it going.
Two questions: 1. How difficult is it to replace the starter motor?
- The BCAA guy made tap-starting it look rather easy. However, I’ve watched a couple of videos on tap starting, none were on a Mazda 3 and one mentioned the issues with causing a shortage if you tap on the incorrect area. Is there any difficulty in reaching the starter motor from above to tap start it if needed?
Thank you! Nat
